The Lady Pirates, PSC’s volleyball team, got banged up by rival Gulf Coast State College, Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Losing three sets to two took them a step back from taking the conference title.

“You can’t beat an emotionally-momentum team like Gulf Coast,” expressed Chris Laird, volleyball head coach.

In the first set, they were challenged by Gulf Coast’s offense; but then they jumped ahead half-way through the set. The Pirates, keeping their cool, pulled through and finished it 25-20.

Jordan Cangelosi, No. 8, struck four consecutive hits that kept the pirates in the lead.

PSC diligently began the second set, working with each other to finish it with a strong 25-14 win.

With two sets up, the Lady Pirates felt confident going into the third set looking for the conference title; but, the game took an unexpected turn when Gulf Coast fought back, stealing the third set 25-22.

PSC’s Shantel Federick , No. 22, earned more than twelve digs during set three, expressing her desire to win the conference title and hoping the team would pick up the pressure and win the next set.

Come fourth set, Federick continued to show her talent when she added thirteen more digs to her stats, with Sarah Guidry by her side, upping her ace count from 1 to 5.

Unfortunately, the Pirates did not keep it together and lost the fourth set, 25-17.

Gulf Coast eagerly took control at the beginning of set five.

With one last chance for the Lady Pirates to win the game, even with PSC’s Megan Gorey and her six kills in the last set, it was not enough to win.

Pirates lost the fifth set 15-9.

“They decided they wanted it more than we did when it mattered most, so we need to make sure we stay committed and work hard for the next match,” added coach Laird.

PSC endured an unexpected loss to Gulf Coast and will fight them again next week for the conference title.
