“So you want to go to Lakeland, huh?” Coach Pete Pena asked after the Lady Pirates dominated over Gulf Coast Community College.  Lakeland is where the girls will travel in a couple of weeks to compete at the state level.

“The first game was the hardest and most intense,” Freshman Player Heather Riley said, “but we beat Gulf Coast 36-34.  It was a real nail biter!”

Once PJC won the first game, they gained more confidence which helped the team win the next two games 30-23 and 30-21.

“Every point was so important, so we worked together and concentrated on getting one point at a time and that made us closer as a team,”  Riley said.

From here, the girls will advance to the FCCAA State Tournament in Lakeland where they will play the Manatee Community College Lancers.  PJC has played MCC before, and Riley said it will be tough but the team is up for the challenge.  The dates for the tournament will be November 3-5.

Since their win against GCCC, the Lady Pirates beat Faulkner State College on Thursday night and will be playing Jefferson Davis Community College on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

Last but not least, the girls would like to thank the PJC baseball team for their “thoughtfulness” in decorating each of their cars before they returned home from Panama City Tuesday night.
