Synopsis:  This is a classic story of a man finding his inner hero with the help of a selfless mentor.  Jake Fischer, played by Ashton Kutcher, was accepted into every Ivy League school on a scholarship for his incredible swimming skills.  Instead, Fischer enlists in the U.S. Coast Guard where he meets legendary rescue swimmer Ben Randall, played by Kevin Costner.  Fischer’s cocky attitude sparks competition with Randall and only after realizing each other’s past do Fischer and Randall begin to work as a team.  Costner and Kutcher give spectacular performances in this believable tearjerker.

What to remember:  The beginning.  The end makes a reference to the entire opening, making for a perfect closing to the movie.  There are also some important details in the middle of the movie, so pay close attention!

Highlight of the movie:  Watching Fischer transform into a true hero, but sadly seeing Randall losing his grip.  It shows that even a person with a sad past can make something of his/herself.  Also, seeing Fischer snapping into shape under the watchful eye of Randall was great eye candy: who wouldn’t want to see Kutcher topless?  The U.S. Coast Guard has never been so sexy.

Genre:  Action/Drama

Running Time:  2 hours 19 minutes

Rating:  Even though Hollywood critics gave the movie a low rating, I give “The Guardian” 3 « stars.
