“Get on the ground, stop resisting,” was heard by students and teachers in the Humanities wing of the Allen Liberal Arts building about 10 a.m. on Sept. 26.

According to PJC Police Chief Nancy Newland, 20-year-old Alton Prewitt was tackled at the PJC Pensacola campus after being chased by PJC police.

A loud music complaint was made against Prewitt, who was sitting in his vehicle outside of building 1, when Police approached him about the disturbance.

The officer asked him if there was anything illegal inside of the car.

Initially, he said no, but later admitted that there was a firearm.

Drugs were also found when the car was searched.

Then Prewitt ran from the scene.

Police followed him from the parking lot outside of building 1 and into building 6.

The chase continued to building 4 where he was then apprehended outside of classrooms and offices in the building.

Officer Chris Phillips pepper sprayed the suspect. The spray spread throughout the building and could be smelled upstairs.

Student Chris Laddell was in Dr. Charlie Schuler’s class when the pepper spray crept under the door, forcing him and other students to relocate to the library.

An ambulance and fire truck were called for the history department secretary, Susan Roberts. She took in too much pepper spray and had difficulty breathing.

A full report will be filed by Officer Phillips before 3:00 p.m. Sept. 26 by next Wednesday.
