PJC has gone wireless! PJC has created a state-of the-art wireless system to cater to the needs of the Pensacola, Warrington, and Milton campuses.  Pensacola Junior College is now the host of the largest Cisco wireless system in Northwest Florida.  The system is set to help a number of the college’s programs.

According to a news release in May, William Meloy, director of computer services and telecommunications systems for PJC, the system will help spread the academic growth of that this community college has to offer.

“We envision using this system in a variety of ways, from supporting the training of nursing students at the Warrington campus to using wireless PDAs that can do remote soil monitoring for the horticulture program at the Milton campus,” Meloy said.

Besides having the new technology to boost PJC’s academic programs, many students are already taking advantage of using the new technology with their personal notebook computers.

According to Donald Hasting, a junior, he mainly uses WiFi because of its convenience.

“I mainly just use it around the computer lab, but I get good service and I can use it for both [school and to kill time],” Hasting said.

Hasting isn’t the only student that appreciates the WiFi system on campus for its acccessiblity.

“It’s very convenient and I use it a lot to relax or in-between classes, or just for my online class,” said freshman Katie Walker.

The WiFi system on campus is not just a means of recreation; for some, it’s getting a head start on some homework.

“It has excellent service, very fast,” Walker said. “I can just come into the Student Center and do my homework without being distracted at home.”
