After playing their first game at home this season in game one of the PJC Lady Pirate Classic, PJC improved to 5-1 by defeating Andrew College for the second time this year, 80-51.
Andrew College hurt themselves with numerous turnovers and PJC dominated the boards with 38 rebounds and scored many second chance points.
“They took advantage of us on the inside,” said Andrew College head coach Mike Riffe. “They did a great job on the boards.”
Five minutes into the game, PJC went on an 8-0 run and followed that with a 9-0 run three minutes later. PJC led 26-10 with 11:22 left in the first half. The Lady Pirates never looked back, leading at halftime 46-25.
PJC maintained their big lead in the second half with a series of runs, including a 12-2 spurt with 12:31 remaining, and ended with a 29-point victory.
The victory was due to an unselfish team effort from PJC. All players, except one, on the roster scored at least one basket.
“A lot of players played well,” said PJC head coach Chanda Rigby. “It was just pretty good team ball.”
Sophomore Brittanie Alston led PJC with 14 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Dominque Sutton scored 11 points, sophomore Genisha Dunbar had 9 points, and freshman Channa Willis had 8 points.
Freshman Christa Smith led Andrew College with 8 points and freshman Danielle Brooks had 7 points.
PJC’s All-Conference point guard Kristian Diggs, still nursing an ankle injury, saw limited action off the bench. The coaching staff said that they are planning to excuse her from practice over the Thanksgiving weekend and expect a full recovery by then.
PJC will play their second game of the PJC Lady Pirate Classic Saturday against Santa Fe Community College, who beat their opponent, LSU-Eunice, 123-60. Tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
