The Fifth Annual Dan Seely Ball Banger took place Sept. 15, 2012 on Pensacola Beach in the early hours of the morning heat in honor of Daniel Seely, who passed away five years ago on Dec. 25, 2007.
This man was the founder of the Gulf Coast Social Club that organized volleyball tournaments throughout the state of Florida, but mostly in Pensacola.
Dan began this tournament to ensure a good time on the beach meeting new people, having fun and playing volleyball; a game that he enjoyed himself.
Games began at 9 o’clock out behind The Dock, a local spot on the beach that draws tourists and locals from around the area.
A former Pensacola State College volleyball player, Laura Hill, who now coaches Escambia High School varsity volleyball, was out there playing with one of her previous students and friend, Elva Carter.
Also, two Escambia High Schools seniors, who are dual enrolled at PSC, came out to play: Brianne Kuhnhausen and Alexis Lugo.
This tournament was not about winning, but about having a good time and being a good sport.
“I liked playing it just for fun because it was great to just be out there playing in honor of Dan. I didn’t know him, but it’s great to know that we helped out and supported a fun, annual event that he started,” expressed Lugo after she and her partner lost four out of five games while enjoying themselves on the beach.
If you enjoy the sun, the surf, and beach volleyball come out next year!
