Pensacola State College students, Rachael Andrews, Chau Le, winner- John Slay, enjoyed ice cream during the Bright Future Scholarship ice cream social.

A crowd of 200- 250 Pensacola State College students attended the “Bright Future Scholarship Ice Cream Social.” There were only three lucky winners: Montel Michael, John Slay, and Shani Walker.

John Slay, one of the scholarship winners said, “I was shocked when my name was called. I won a $100 gas card, umbrella, folding chair, shirt, and some beach supplies.” Slay also is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and owns a GPA of 3.5.

In spite of the weather conditions, and the event being moved from building 6 to building 5, students still enjoyed the festivities of the day. The “Wobble Dance” song gave students the urge to hit the dance floor and trade some of their dance moves.

There were Bright Future T-Shirts that were given away to students, and of course the cups of ice cream that came in handy on a hot and humid day.

Mike Mabry, district manager of the Pensacola district lottery said, “Our goal is to keep the smarter kids in the state of Florida, instead of kids going out of state to college. We have some remarkable schools here in Florida.”

This year marks 25 years the Florida Lottery has been in existence helping fund education in Florida.

There were also other students who turned in their applications, but were not as fortunate to be a winner.

Chau Le, a business major at Pensacola State College said, “I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa and I was also one of the applicants for the Bright Future Scholarship.”

The students did not show any resentment for not being a winner, they seemed happy to enjoy the activities for the day, and to show support for their fellow classmates who did receive the honor.
