The Corsair
Students from the Drawing II class taught by Paula Takahashi were able to exit the classroom and practice their artistic skills upon the sidewalk. Two separate groups worked for hours to draw a giant T-Rex and ball pit outside the art building.
“Five to six students worked on the ball pit out of 20 in the class,” Richard Rodriguez, Drawing II student who worked on the ball pit, said. “It took about four hours. We figured doing the ball pit would be easier, but since we did the same shape over and over it got so repetitive and so detailed that it took longer.”
Even though the ball pit was drawn in the shade of the courtyard, the group still endured the harsh Florida heat.
“It got hot,” Rodriguez said. “We had to bring out umbrellas.”
Another group of Drawing II students worked on the T-Rex which took about two hours to draw. Although Takahashi narrowed down the designs from which the students could choose to draw, the class decided on the T-Rex and ball pit designs.
“We were drawing skeletons for our model drawing, and we were supposed to do a picture where we could put it on a sidewalk,” Jeff Gibbs, Drawing II student who worked on the T-Rex, said. “We talked about getting the whole class to do a ball pit, but we decided to split it up into two groups because the whole class working on one pit would have been overcomplicated.”
