March Madness has been just that – madness. Three ‘Cinderella’ teams – Wichita State, George Mason and Bradley – and teams like Michigan State, Syracuse, and Iowa going out in the first round have turned my bracket to confetti. I can, at least, say that I got one thing right.
Duke was bounced out in the Sweet 16 by LSU on Thursday. Some of you recall that in the Jan. 25 issue, I said don’t be so hasty in giving Duke the title. Some of you said that I was wrong and that Duke IS the best team in college basketball. Now I can have the last laugh. Duke was exploited by LSU’s defense. J.J. Reddick only had 11 points. All season, the Blue Devils relied on Reddick’s scoring and LSU did not allow him to score. LSU was impressive holding Duke to its lowest total score in a game since 1996.
I may have not gotten much right this March, but at least I can walk away, with my head held high, knowing that I was right about the Duke Blue Devils.
