From Staff Reports
Pensacola State College’s chapter of ABG attended the national conference March 31-April 3 in Cozumel, Mexico.
In attendance were six officers, Sally Hestle, President, Michael Mangosing, Vice President, Edina Simmons, Secretary, Naomi Howard, Web Master, Janene Dewall, Treasurer, Liz Faires, Community Services/ Public Relations and Student National Executive Committee officer (2010-11), and two academic advisors Richard Irvine and Carla Rich.
The Alpha Alpha chapter submitted three presentations, four topic-specific essays and one service project for scholarship consideration. Michael Mangosing received the Eva Bobrow Medallion of Excellence Award and Liz Faires received The Ester Cross-Carter Memorial Essay Scholarship, Helping Others.
The Alpha Alpha chapter received the National Service Project Scholarship for the Zimbabwe Orphanage Project. The chapter collected items for the orphanage from September to November 2010.
This is an orphanage that also operates as a public school. The teachers have been living at the orphanage/school for the past year without pay.
The chapter collected about 4,000 pounds of books, clothing and medical supplies. Items not used by the school are distributed to the local community.
This project not only helped the orphanage but as active chapter members helped the orphanage they became aware of the plight of children in Zimbabwe.
This could not have been accomplished without the help of the students and employees of Pensacola State College, Gulf Coast Bluegrass Music Association, Walgreens (Milton), Carol Horigan and the members of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of ABG.
