In years past PJC employees have been offered an annual flu shot courtesy of the college, but if they want it this year they will have to pay for it.
Judy Harrington, PJC’s Health Clinic Coordinator, said that the college’s budget is too tight to offer the shots and that “because of the prices and the cost of the vaccine, the college decided not to do it [this year].”
Charlie Schuler, head of the history, languages and philosophy department, says that he understands why the college is charging for the shot. “For as long as I can remember,” Schuler said. “the Escambia County School System has provided the flu shots – however, their faculty has always had to pay for it. In a way, we at PJC have been lucky.
“I am just happy that Tom Delaino and Judy Harrington were able to obtain [the shots], even if we do have to pay for it,” Schuler said.
Harrington wanted to make sure that it was offered, especially since many area doctors aren’t carrying it, so she contacted Maxim Healthcare Services and arranged to have the shot administered at a decent price. This year the campus is offering the pneumonia shot as well, and non-employees are welcome to receive it.
