Intramurals are back at PJC and intramurals coordinator Doug Rogers has dedicated the first half of the semester to flag football, the second half to golf, tennis, racquet ball, and bowling, with many other outdoor activities in between. All students are welcome to play.
“It’s a great way to meet people outside the classroom,” Kirk Slay, a referee and intramurals helper, said.
There also will be other types of football events scheduled into the month of October.
Football events such as the Pass, Punt, and Kick and the Quarterback Challenge are one-day contests that measure distance and accuracy with a football.
“The Quarterback Challenge is a lot of fun for students because they get to throw footballs at moving targets,” Rogers said.
Although flag football will be Rogers’ main focus, there are other intramurals to mention. Starting at noon on Sept. 21, one sport will be played on “Wacky Wednesdays” in this order: Frisbee golf, ultimate Frisbee, and almost golf.
Besides these activities, there are two Blackwater River canoe trips planned as well as an overnight hiking trip. The first canoe trip scheduled for Sept. 30 will be from noon to 4 p.m., followed by an optional low elements ropes course. The second canoe trip is overnight. Rogers says only 14 participants may go, but sign-ups are first-come first-served.
This is only part of what is scheduled for the intramurals program.
Golf, racquetball, tennis, and a bowling league will pick up in mid-October, and a mini-triathlon has been planned on Nov. 29.
And yet there’s more. Sports clubs including Golf Club, Tennis Club, Outdoor Club, and Soccer Club will meet once a month to coordinate their own activities.
“We try to make it a friendly environment,” Slay said. “It’s a fun experience and it keeps your mind off classes.”
