PJC Women’s Basketball gave the PJC community a big reason to celebrate on April 14. Two of the biggest stars on the Lady Pirate team have signed to play at two of the biggest basketball schools in the country.
Guard Dominique Washington signed to play next year for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, and Forward Tameka Kelly has signed to play for the West Virginia University Mountaineers.
“Our women’s basketball program has had a lot of success the past two years, mostly because of these girls,” Athletic Director Bill Hamilton said at a press conference.
Washington, a 5’10 guard from Pensacola’s Escambia High School, was second in scoring this past year for the Lady Pirates with 14 points per game, and was a two year starter for PJC. She was also selected to the Panhandle Conference All-Conference team, the FCCAA All-State team and was an All-American Nominee.
Dominique has also been on the Dean’s List at PJC every term of her PJC career.
Kelly, a forward from Pensacola’s Pine Forest High School, led the team in scoring with 18 points per game, and was second on the team in rebounds with six rebounds per game. She was also a two year starter for the Lady Pirates, and was captain of the 2004-2005 squad.
Kelly was a Panhandle Conference first-team selection, an FCCAA All-State selection and was just the 4th Lady Pirate basketball player to be selected as an All-American with her All-American Honorable Mention. She was also the Corsair’s 2004-2005 PJC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Under the leadership of Kelly and Washington, the PJC Women’s Basketball team won an astounding 48 games in two years, and was nationally ranked both years.
“We’ve got some big shoes to fill on both sides,” Coach Vicki Carson said, “but I think we’ll be okay.”
