“Here we go White!” Coach Leah Drury, of Pensacola State College, cheered as she watched her Lady Pirates fall to the Northwest Florida State College Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Lou Ross Center.
With a 0-5 record, Wednesday’s double header began with PSC’s women still fighting for their first conference win this season.
Six minutes into the first half of the game and the pirates only had two points on the board.
With their heads hung low, they were not able to grip the ball and sink it through the net as often as they needed.
PSC walked off the court at halftime with a 36-15 score.
At the second half, the ladies burst out of the locker room with full momentum ready to fight for the win.
“We knew we had to come out strong the first three or four minutes of the second half to change our momentum and pick it up,” coach Drury said, and that is what her small squad of nine did.
PSC sophomore guard Ricki Alex showed her quick defensive reactions, stealing the ball twice, resulting in four points.
Coach Drury’s emotion for the game became too much when the referee called a technical on her vocal outbursts and handed the Raiders two free points.
Their ship could not match the Raiders’, as PSC sunk to a 51-29 loss.
Although they were not able to pull ahead, the Lady Pirates fought through another game and will battle Chipola College 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at home.
