The Lady Pirates clinched the Panhandle Conference Championship beating Gulf Coast College in 3 sets at Tuesday’s match in Panama City: 25-22, 25-20, and 25-17.
“Hats off to Gulf Coast College, they played harder than they have in the past and obviously the scores show that,” said Head Coach Chris Laird. “But we didn’t play up to our potential and definitely not up to my expectations.”
Through the frustration and nervousness, the Lady Pirates held their own to take a spot at State.
“I was getting frustrated but I think we all were in the first set, but we kept pushing through it and I’m glad we beat them,” said Megan Gorey. “I’m extremely extremely excited. I hope we can continue to move forward and keep pushing and do well at state.”
The Lady Pirates made some great plays in the match. Megan Gorey got the first double double as a team with 12 kills and 14 digs.
“We are proud of Megan for doing that,” Laird said. “I’m very proud of all of the girls and glad we won.”
Oct. 19 will be Sophomore Night. This will be the Lady Pirates last home match at night.
“It will be an emotional event,” Laird said. “It’s a night for the parents to come and be a part of their daughters’ accomplishments.”
Lady Pirates will be playing Gulf Coast College that evening.
“We want to put our best foot forward because it’s an opportunity for them to come over and say hey, we’re going to get this win and ruin your Sophomore Night,” Laird said.
With the Lady Pirates heading to State Nov. 4-6 , they have a lot to look forward to.
“Everything we do now has to improve us,” Laird said. “We have to get better by the things we do now.”
