The PJC women’s basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend in the Florida Women’s Junior College Shootout in Gainesville, Fla.
On Friday, the Lady Pirates defeated Broward Community College 94-52. Head coach Chanda Rigby said that she and the coaching staff incorporated a new defensive press scheme into their game plan and that it bothered Broward throughout the game.
Sophomore Victoria Hunt led the team with 22 points. Sophomores Dominique Sutton and Brittanie Alston both had 12 points and Freshman Angelese Hunter had 11 points. Hunter had a perfect field goal percentage, making all five of her attempts.
On Saturday, PJC was defeated by Santa Fe Community College 94-83. Santa Fe defeated PJC earlier in the season by 25 points. Rigby said that PJC was able to make improvements and give Santa Fe more of a challenge.
One key to the game for Santa Fe was sophomore guard Steffi Sorenson, who was named the MVP of the PJC Lady Pirates Classic on Nov. 17. PJC was able to minimize Sorenson’s ability in the first half but broke out in the second half with 17 points. Sorenson finished the game with 25 points. Freshman Nichelle Glover led all scorers with 29 points.
Freshman Angelese Hunter led PJC with 17 points off the bench. Sophomores Victoria Hunt, Dominque Sutton, and Freshman Nikel White each had 16 points.
The Lady Pirates (9-3) will return home to play in the PJC classic on Dec. 14 and 15. They will face Cleveland State Community College on Dec. 14 and Gadsden State Community College on Dec. 15. Both games set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Lou Ross Center.
