More than 100 PJC students will be honored at the annual Student Excellence Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, in the Pensacola campus Student Center. PJC’s vice president of academic affairs, Dr. David Sam, will be the guest speaker.

The ceremony is “a very positive culmination of student excellence,” said one of the organizers, Dr. Georgieanna Bryant, director of student affairs at Milton. She praised the event for its broad recognition of student achievement, going beyond grade point averages.

Grades, of course, are an important factor in some of the awards. The Scholastic Achievement Awards, for example, will be presented to 64 students with a minimum 3.9 GPA who have completed 45 hours or more of a 60-hour program.

While GPA is a consideration for the 14 Department Scholars and 17 Program Scholars, these awards are not necessarily presented to those with the highest grades.

The recipients are selected by the individual academic departments for outstanding work in academic or vocational endeavors.

Leadership Awards will be presented to nine students in recognition of their participation in school-related projects or programs, while the 20 Service Award recipients will be honored for their hard work and volunteerism.

The Sharlene E. Burkhardt Award was established as a memorial to the late student by her parents.

This award, which is not based on academics, is presented to one male and one female sophomore each year for outstanding service.

Along with these honorees, five PJC students who are members of the All-Florida Academic Teams will be recognized by Phi Theta Kappa.

A reception in the student center will follow the event.
