Milton campus holds health fair

The Milton campus will host its sixth annual Health Fair from 8 a.m. – noon on March 24 at the Lifestyle Improvement and Fitness Education (L.I.F.E.) center.

The L.I.F.E. center at the Milton campus provides instruction and state-of-the-art facilities for improving fitness and well-being.

Thirty health organizations will be on hand doing blood pressure screenings, heart risk assessments, pulmonary capacity tests and chair massages, and distributing information. The Health Fair is free and open to students and the public. A total blood profile will be available for $20 and requires a 10-hour fast.

<b>Flower show at Milton campus</b>

The 7th Annual Emerald Coast Flower and Garden Festival will be held the first weekend in April (April 2, 3 and 4) on the Milton Campus.

Festival hours are from 2-5 p.m. on April 2, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 3, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on April 4.

Over 40 garden related vendors will be on hand selling their wares.

Items for sale include woody trees and shrubs, perennials, annual flowering plants, herbs, orchids, hanging baskets, bromeliads, garden accessories, pots and containers, and other garden related items.

There will also be food vendors and entertainment to include Southern Drawl, a local bluegrass group.

Admission is free and open to the public.

<b>Spring concert set</b>

The Music and Theatre Department presents the Wind and Jazz Ensembles? Spring Concert at 7:30 p.m. on March 25 in the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium. 

The Wind Ensemble?s program is a concert featuring William Schuman?s ?Chester.?  The first new work is an adaptation of Franz Biebl?s ?Ave Maria.? The second new work is a composition by Samuel Hazo, entitled ?Ride.?

The Wind Ensemble will conclude its portion of the concert with Franz von Supp‚?s ?Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna.?  This selection will feature the Wind Ensemble?s principal clarinetist, Stefanie Harger. One of the top clarinetists in the state of Florida, Harger has been offered a full-tuition scholarship next year to Arizona State University. The Wind Ensemble is under the direction of PJC Music and Theatre department head Don Snowden.

The highly acclaimed PJC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Tim Jackson, will present a program including Kahn and Van Heusen?s ?All The Way,? Lopez?s ?Macumba? and ?You Lika? Da Juice,? Dean Sorensen?s ?Veggie Came Home,? and Dave Eshelman?s ?Mystique.?  The saxophone section will be featured in Carl Strommen?s ?Sonny?s Place.?

Admission is free. This concert is part of the PJC Lyceum, a series of musical and theatrical performances and lectures. For more information, call the Lyceum box office at 484-1847.

<b>Folk singer performs at PJC</b>

The ?Coffee House Series? sponsored by Student Activities will feature Amanda Garrigues, singer/songwriter, at 7 p.m., April 1 in the Student Center on the Pensacola campus. The concert is $2, but free for students.

Garrigues has toured the South and Northeast for more than three years performing with artists like Johatha Brooke, Michelle Malone, Iris Dement and Ferron. 

Garrigues? credits include receiving an honorable mention for the Indie Band Search and being a semi-finalist in the E.A.R.S. Talent Showcase in NYC.  She was also invited to showcase at Nashville?s NEA Extravaganza, the Atlantis Music Conference, NEMO, Cutting Edge of the Campfire in Boston, the Rockrgirl Music Conference in Seattle and the APCA National Conference.  Amanda is currently finalizing a live album to be released this winter and was recently nominated for ?Favorite Female Music Performer? by CampusAwards.com.

<b>Earth Day to be held downtown</b>

Earth Day Pensacola 2004 will be held from 10 a.m. to  5 p.m. on April 17 at Bartram Park, on Main Street across from Seville Square. This year?s theme is ?Earth Day, Every Day.?

Earth Day Pensacola will bring together federal, state and local environmental agencies, educational and activist groups, natural health practitioners, and businesses offering environmentally sustainable products. 

Speakers will offer information on topics ranging from creating ?village? communities that support car-free living, to ?green building,? to recycling and managing trash.

Vendors will offer natural clothing, jewelry, art, herbal and vitamin supplements, musical instruments (drums and flutes) and organic dog food.
