Two of PJC’s intramural flag football teams participated in the 26th Annual West Florida Flag Football Regional Championships on Nov.12-13 where a total of 15 teams played at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
According to intramural coordinator and Team A quarterback Doug Rogers, the Team B club team for PJC, lost both of its games in the first morning of the tournament to Florida State and to South East Louisiana.
Team A advanced in the bracket with a 34-32 win to Alabama A & M and a 26-19 defeat to University of Alabama – Birmingham Saturday. Sunday, they took a 49-12 win to UWF’s True Art and their final 34-31 loss to Southern University of Baton Rouge. Southern won the tournament with a leading score of 40-14 against Troy.
Winchell Richardson, Kyle Brooks, Reggie Sanders, and Freedom Whiting made Rogers’ list of players with good tournament play. Brooks played on an ankle that he hurt in the Swamp Bowl in Gainesville and Richardson did a good job of stepping in for a another player who wasn’t feeling well, Rogers said.
“We are competitive enough to win, but we are still trying to get our feet off the ground” Rogers said. “Those teams were not undefeatable. I think just making more plays will help us get prepared for nationals.”
The 2005 ACIS Flag Football Nationals will be held at Brosnaham Park on Dec. 29-31 where PJC will co-host the event with UWF’s staff. The University of New Orleans and ACIS will also join in to help make this event happen. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the UNO Relief Fund. Normally UNO hosts the national championships but couldn’t this year because of damage from Hurricane Katrina.
