The PJC women’s basketball team won both of their games in the Okaloosa Walton Lady Raider Classic, which was held on Friday and Saturday.
In Friday’s game, PJC defeated South Georgia Tech 70-52. Sophomore Dominique Sutton had a breakout game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Victoria Hunt had 14 points and freshman Nikel White also scored 14 points.
The Pirates got out to a slow start as South Georgia Tech hit three straight 3-pointers to start the game. Head coach Chanda Rigby said that it just took some time for the Lady Pirates to settle down and execute efficiently. Rigby said that this was the best game so far this season that PJC has played in the post.
In Saturday’s game, PJC defeated Darton College 67-36. Victoria Hunt had 17 points and 7 rebounds, Nikel White had 15 points and Sierra Highgate had 14 points and made four 3-point field goals.
Rigby said that her team played a solid defensive game, a point of emphasis for their game strategy. PJC struggled a little in the first half because of lack of effort on rebounds but picked up the slack in the second half and pulled away.
The Lady Pirates (8-2) will have a week to prepare for their next tournament which will be the Florida Women’s JUCO Shootout in Gainesville, Fla. PJC will play Broward Community College on Friday and Santa Fe Community College on Saturday.
