A former Corsair sports editor has been charged with “possession of [a] photograph of [a] sexual performance by a child.”
Brian Nephi McLellan, 19, was arrested by PJC campus police and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 12
The offense, a third degree felony, is punishable by up to five years in prison.
On July 21, Corsair Adviser Christina Drain discovered what appeared to be child pornography in a staff computer’s recycling bin. The information was reported to campus computer personnel, who removed the computer from the Corsair office for examination.
That afternoon, McLellan was questioned by Drain and English Department Head Thom Botsford, and then suspended from The Corsair pending the outcome of the investigation.
Later, all five Corsair computers were seized; two have been returned to the office. The remaining three computers are still impounded.
When reached by telephone, McLellan declined to comment, but in an e-mail dated Aug. 9 and sent to The Corsair address, he said “I hold myself responsible for everything that was done, and I just hope that you guys can forgive me for everything.”
McLellan’s first court date has been set for Sept. 2.
