The Lady Pirates improved their record to 13-5 with a victory against Faulkner State Community College on Friday night.
In the first game, PJC took the lead early and held it thanks to successful blocking, 30-16. Game 2 was much closer. It was point-for-point until the halfway mark, but the Pirates pulled ahead and won with a score of 30-24.
The Pirates took an early lead in Game 3 but the Sun Chiefs responded and won 30-29. As they moved into Game 4, it looked as though it would be a match like the previous one, but PJC quickly took over and clenched a victory, 30-19.
“Tonight we played great,” said Head Coach Pete Pena. “I’m very, very proud of our sophomores because that’s mainly who played tonight.”
The Pirates have had some line-up changes in the past couple of weeks because of injuries to Margo Yates and Lori Chancey.
“We’ve had to shuffle things a little,” Pena said. “It doesn’t give us the depth that we are used to having.”
In the conference, the Lady Pirates are 2-0 and need one more victory to claim another championship.
“We had to go to match 5 last year. Hopefully it won’t take that long this year,” Pena said.
