Hello and welcome to the gaming corner and part one of a two-part review of a little something everyone knows as the Orange Box.  Inside the game are five completely different games, three of which are part of a famous series known as “Half Life 2,” but those three games I will get into next week.

This week however, I wish to focus on two games that are not based in the same genre, “Portal” and “Team Fortress 2.”  These two games are not originally created by the same people who did “Half Life,” but the company that owns “Half Life,” Valve, decided to pay them to put the games in.  Let’s start with “Portal” first.

“Portal” is a Puzzle/FPS game where all you have is a portal gun, and you have to shoot the walls to form other portals to pass through various obstacles.  This game slowly pushes you into the storyline, and it shoves you right to the point where you want to throw your controller through the TV starting around level 11 or 12.

There are 19 levels in all, and each one is more difficult than the last.  This game sounds like it’s annoying as hell, but once you start playing it, you’ll love the game.

Next, we have “Team Fortress 2,” a game that is wacky, cell shaded, and extremely hilarious.  It is purely multiplayer, so if you don’t have Internet or any kind of cable connection, you are screwed.  You can choose one of nine different classes, each sorted into different categories.

You can pick an offensive type (Soldier, Pyro, Scout), a defensive type (Engineer, Heavy,  Demo-Man) or a support type (Medic, Spy, Sniper).  Each class is self explanatory, and each class has its own look.  The off the wall humor this game can bring, along with the frustration if you don’t work together, can be excruciating, but this game is good.

So, what are my ratings for these games?

“Portal”: A

“Team Fortress 2”: A+

Next week, I will have reviews on “Half Life 2,” “HL2 Episode 1” and “HL2 Episode 2.”   If you have any questions or comments, write me at dms12722@students.pjc.edu or djs8312000@yahoo.com.
