Winter is on its way, and for most people that means illness is also on its way. A local doctor has offered a few basic tips on staying healthy during the winter season. Dr. Lisa King recently moved to Pace from Zanesville, Ohio, and joined Gulf Coast Physician Partners. King had several things to say on the subject of preventative medicine.
“Diet has a large affect on the body’s ability to fight infections. It’s very important to eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, but since I know most people aren’t going to do that, I generally recommend vitamin supplements. They aren’t as good for you, but they’re a lot better than nothing.”
Basic hygiene also plays a large role in preventing the spread of disease. King listed several basic hygiene rules which are often ignored.
“It’s important to wash your hands frequently. It doesn’t matter what kind of soap you use, as long as you’re thorough. Wash under the nails and in all of the little crevices and such.
“It also doesn’t matter if you use soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser like PurellT. Additionally, you should try to avoid touching your face -especially around your mouth and eyes-even with clean hands. That’s an easy way for viruses and bacteria to enter your system.”
King also stressed the importance of practicing good manners when coughing, sneezing or even yawning.
“Cover your mouth when you [do so], but not with your hands. Use a tissue, a handkerchief, or even a sleeve, if necessary. Abiding by this rule can prevent the spread of your germs onto innocent bystanders.”
It can be difficult to stay healthy in an area where the seasons seem to change on a daily basis, but following these practical tips can help make the Northwest Florida version of winter more tolerable.
