The Lady Pirates record-breaking winning streak is over with a loss to the nation’s No. 2 ranked Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City Saturday.
The teams were tied with just more than a minute left in the game but the Lady Pirates missed two shots and the Commodores capitalized on a rebound and foul shot to win 65-62.
They are now 3-1 in conference play and 18-1 overall. The loss marks the end of an 18-game winning streak, the best the girls program has seen.
“This is the best start we have had in my tenure here,” Coach Vicki Carson said.
The Lady Pirates began conference play on Jan. 7 with at win over Okaloosa Walton Community College 83-65. LaTayna Jones set a career high by scoring 25 points. Dominique Washington dropped in 14 of her own.
On Jan. 10, the Lady Pirates went to Tallahassee to play Tallahassee Community College.
They kept their unbeaten streak alive by winning 65-57. Washington led the Lady Pirates attack by scoring 21 points, Tameka Kelly had a double-double scoring 10 points and clearing 11 boards, and Sonya Coleman scored in double figures with 11 points.
On Jan. 14, the Lady Pirates played host to Chipola Community College.
They left with a decisive victory 61-38. Jones led the Lady Pirate attack by scoring 16 points, Washington put in a bakers dozen (13), and Kelly added 12.
The trio combined for 41 points, more than Chipola scored as a team (38).
PJC, ranked No. 3 in the nation, will play defending national champion Gulf Coast two more times in the regular season.
The Lady Pirates have a week off before their next game Jan. 24 at Okaloosa Walton Community College in Niceville.
The next home game is Jan. 28 with Tallahassee Community College.
