The PJC women’s basketball team is on a three-game winning streak, after a blow-out Nov. 11 by Santa Fe Community College. The Pirates defeated LSU-Eunice 80-74 on Nov. 27 and won both games in the Okaloosa Walton Lady Raider Classic against South Georgia Tech 70-52 and Darton College 67-36.
Head coach Chanda Rigby said that the Lady Pirates have made many improvements lately. They are executing better on offense and the team is starting to get more consistent play out of its most prolific scorer, sophomore shooting guard Victoria Hunt. Hunt has averaged 16.3 points in the three wins.
Freshman forward Nikel White has been PJC’s most consistent post-player so far. White had a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, against LSU-Eunice. She also averaged 14.5 points for the Lady Raider Classic.
As sophomore point guard Kristian Diggs has been sidelined with an injury through most of the season thus far, PJC has found a good young player in freshman Sierra Highgate. Highgate helped spark a comeback against LSU-Eunice by scoring 15 points in the game. She had 14 points against Darton College, including four 3-point field goals.
Rigby has slowly been working Diggs back into the starting lineup as she is nearly at full-strength but she has been a little slow regaining her rhythm.
PJC (8-2) has had trouble with getting off to quick starts in most of their games. The Lady Pirates trailed early in their last three games only to settle down and put the game away in the second half.
The Lady Pirates have four games remaining on their non-conference schedule. They will travel to Gainesville to play in the Florida Women’s JUCO Shootout, Dec. 7-Dec. 8. They will play Broward Community College and then will play a rematch against Santa Fe Community College. PJC will conclude its non-conference season at home with the PJC Classic. They will play Cleveland State Community College on Dec. 14 and Gadsden State Community College on Dec. 15. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
