Approximately 100 students will be honored for their achievements and service at PJC during a ceremony April 12 in the Pensacola campus Student Center.
The annual Student Excellence Awards ceremony recognizes students for their scholastic, service and leadership qualities throughout the year.
This year’s theme will be “Tradition of Excellence.” Those recognized will receive certificates, plaques, medals or $100 checks, depending on the honor, from PJC President Tom Delaino.
Speaking at the ceremony will be Elba Robertson, a former member of the PJC Board of Trustees.
The event is coordinated by the Student Excellence Committee, which started planning in November. Heading the committee for her third straight year is Dr. Georgieanna Bryant, PJC student services director at the Milton campus.
“This ceremony is a way for us to annually take a look at the good things that our students are doing on all campuses,” Bryant said.
The departmental awards recognize scholarship in the various academic disciplines and programs. The student recipients are chosen by department heads and committees of faculty.
Students will also be receiving awards for outstanding leadership and service beyond the call of duty.
Additionally, students will be recognized for high grade point averages. These scholastic achievement awards honor those who have earned an academic GPA of 3.5 or higher and have finished at least 75 percent of their academic program.
Two students will receive $100 each when they are presented with the Sharlene E. Burkhardt Award. Every year, since the late 1960’s, the Burkhardt family donates a total of $200 to be divided between one male and one female in memory of their daughter, Sharlene E. Burkhardt, who died a sudden death in 1968.
Students, family and faculty are welcome at the event, which begins at 7 p.m. After the ceremony, refreshments will be served.
