At first glance, Sandi Danielson might look like a wild child, but upon looking closer one can see that she is a genuinely sweet and caring girl who just so happens to express herself through fashions using lots of colors and textures.

Danielson is a first year photography major who chose Pensacola Junior College because it was close to home and because she had heard good things about the art program.

This past fall was her first time using a camera (besides those point and click disposable cameras we all know and love) and she found herself faced with many challenges. At one point Danielson was even thinking about changing her major but decided to stick it out after working one-on-one outside of class with her photography teacher Virginia Vanneman. Vanneman helped her to become more knowledgeable about photography and more confident in her work.

For her final photography project she had a couple of ideas, but ultimately decided to do a humorous series of self-portraits because she likes to make people laugh.

“I wanted to incorporate fashion dressiness with everyday items,” Danielson said.

In her final photography project one sees just that – a woman who is in a space in which she should be famililar with, according to societal beliefs, but instead looks as though she is lost.

“I wanted her to look kind of like a clumsy woman, because I sometimes feel like that,” Danielson said.

Her idea is very suitable for modern society. Many women don’t know how to cook, iron or sew, which is a huge departure from their mothers or even grandmothers.

In her self-portraits Danielson wears beautifula nd dressy clothing you wouldn’t expect to see a woman wear in the house. She acknowledges the impact fashion has had in some of her work but says that the style she wears in the photographs does not reflect her personal sense of fashion.

Danielson has been interested in fashion for awhile and had originally planned on becoming a fashion designer, but because no programs were offered in the Pensacola area, she decided photography was the next best thing. Her goal is to become a fashion photographer. She hopes to one day own a business that sells fashion photography as well as clothing, shoes and accessories.

Right now, Danielson is really into designing shoes. She incorporates pieces of material, buttons, and other randon materials into her designs onto store-bought shoes. On the pairs of shoes she has made for herself she has used everything from pieces of her grandmother’s old quilts to scripture verses and lyrics to songs.
