Friday, March 23 was game three for Pensacola State (seed #4) vs Trinity Valley (seed #1) at the NJCAA Women’s National Championship in Salina, Kan. and ended with an emotional loss for the Lady Pirates 66-71.

The starting line-up for PSC were 5’9 Sophomore Guard from Natchitoches, La. #3 Brandy Broome, 5’7 Sophomore Guard from Washington, DC #5 Ronika Ransford, 5’9 Sophomore Guard/Forward from Pensacola #15 Jasmine Richardson, 5’8 Sophomore Guard from Dale City, Va. #22 Kyana Jacobs and 6’2 Freshman Guard/Forward from East St. Louis, Ill. #25 TeAndrea Smith.

The starting line-up for TVCC were 5’6 Freshman Guard from Teaneck, NJ #1 Starr Breedlove, 5’11 Sophomore Forward from Toronto, Canada #15 Jenea Barrett, 5’11 Sophomore Forward from Ft. Worth, Tx. #21 Keuna Flax, 6′ Sophomore Forward from Bossier City, La. #24 Alice Robinson, and 5’11 Sophomore Forward from Vicksburg, Miss. #32 Sha’Kayla Caples.

At tip off were Smith for PSC and Flax for TVCC. Trinity Valley took possession of the ball and the first basket of the game was made by Flax putting the Lady Cardinals up by 2.

The Lady Pirates tied the game (4-4) at 16:25 but the Lady Cardinals took the lead for the remainder of the first half leaving the score 39-27 at halftime.

First half stats for Pensacola State were Smith with 8 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 blocks and 2 steals, Jacobs with 7 points, 2 assists and 2 steals, Broome with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist, Richardson with 3 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Ransford with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal, Ellison with 2 points and 1 steal, and Hamilton with 1 point, 1 rebound and 1 steal.

Team stats for the first half were Total FG%: 11-40 (27.5%), 3pt FG%: 0-5 (00.0%), FT%: 5-15 (33.3%), and Deadball Rebounds- 7.

First half stats for Trinity Valley were Flax with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal, Lewis with 8 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist, Caples with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, Breedlove with 5 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Vines with 3 points, 4 rebounds and 5 blocks, Gill with 3 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal, Barrett with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, and Jones with 2 rebounds.

Team stats for the first half were Total FG%: 11-24 (45.8%), 3pt FG%: 3-8 (37.5%), FT%: 14-20 (70.0%) and Deadball Rebounds- 3.

Going into the second half Lady Pirate Ransford scored a basket to put PSC down by 10 (29-39). The Lady Cardnials refused to let the Lady Pirates get to close to take the lead from them.

At 9:14 on the clock, Lady Pirate Ransford picked up her fourth foul and was injured being taken off the court by PSC Trainer, Deb Lee and a Salina Medic Staff. Ransford was taken to the hospital and suffered a concussion.

With 7:29 on the clock, Lady Cardinal Flax recieves her third foul to put Lady Pirate Jacobs on the line to catch up Pensacola State putting them down by two (59-57). From there it was a close chance for the Lady Pirates to tie the game but fouls were called to keep the Lady Cardinals ahead.

At 3:21 PSCs Ellison caught her fifth foul taken her out of the game and at 1:26 PSCs Smith fouled out with her fifth foul.

Final game stats for the Lady Pirates were Broome with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals, Smith with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 blocks and 3 steals, Jacobs with 10 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals,  Richardson with 9 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal, Ellison with 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals, Ransford with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal,  Hamilton with 1 point, 3 rebounds and 1 steal, and Mitchell with 1 rebound.

Second half game stats were Total FG%: 15-42 (35.7%), 3pt FG%:1-7 (14.3%), FT%: 8-10 (80.0%) and Deadball Rebounds- 10. Final game stats for PSC were Total FG%: 26-82 (31.7%), 3pt FG%: 1-12 (8.33%), and FT%: 13-25 (52.0%).

Final game stats for the Lady Cardinals were Flax with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 3 steals, Caples with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, Barrett with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal, Breedlove with 8 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal, Lewis with 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, Gill with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal, Vines with 3 points, 4 rebounds and 5 blocks, Jones with 2 points and 3 rebounds,  and Robinson with 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

Second half stats were Total FG%: 9-25 (36.0%), 3pt FG%: 0-4 (0.00%), FT%: 14-19 (73.7%) and Deadball Rebounds- 6. Final game stats were Total FG%: 20-49 (40.8%), 3pt FG%: 3-12 (25.0%), and FT%: 28-39 (71.8%).

This loss put Pensacola State in the running for third or fourth place against Central Arizona College on Saturday, March 24 at 5:oo p.m. and Trinity Valley will play Hutchinson Community College for the Championship game at 7:00 p.m..
