Appropriately for Valentines, red Mars (top center) is approaching the beautiful Pleiades cluster, to pass just south of it on Valentine’s night. Use binocs to see this superb cluster at its best, with over 200 member stars, not just the seven brightest naked eye ones. Took this photo Tuesday evening at 9 PM with Olympus D-595 digital camera, 15 seconds exposure, lens 6.3mm at f/2.8, ISO 400, tripod mounted, 10 second time delay, no flash.
Friday evening’s forecast is for clouds, so after the EAAA meets at 7 PM, and V-P Dewey Barker presents his program on Stamps and Astronomy, we will go downstairs to the planetarium and see a brief demonstration
of the capabilities of the new Digistar II in our planetarium. Public is invited, no charge.
