Widowed matchmaker Dolly Levi sets out to meddle in matches and maybe set up a wedding of her own. Her target is wealthy, but grumpy, Horace Vandergelder. With smitten artist Ambrose in tow, Dolly heads to Yonkers, New York, to secure Horace’s niece, Ermengarde, for Ambrose and Horace for herself.

Horace’s overworked and underappreciated clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, decide they are going to go out for one night on the town, and sneak out while Vandergeler is in New York with Dolly.

In New York, Minnie and widowed Mrs. Irene Molloy are in their hat shop. They are discussing Irene’s plan to marry Horace whether she loves him or not. Cornelius and Barnaby run into the shop to hide from Horace, who is across the street waiting for Dolly.
