Improve health, wellness, with Fitt and Well Club

Pensacola State College (PSC) offers more than just classrooms, studying and homework. It offers fitness and wellness, too, if you’re willing to have fun.
The Fitt and Well Club at PSC is sponsoring a new activity called “Tuesdays at 2, Try Something New.” It gives students the opportunity to try a new type of workout every week without the hassle of becoming a gym member.
You only have to be a PSC student to enjoy these benefits, which include a high intensity interval training class, cardio dance fitness, yoga, kickboxing and more.
The club’s goals are to educate, promote and engage PSC students in health activities focused around the eight basic areas of wellness: physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, spiritual, environmental, occupational and financial.
Said Paul Swanson, coordinator for Human Performance and Recreation, “These eight different goals are like a chain, all linked together. The goal is to get students involved in the areas of wellness. Come dressed to exercise, have fun and learn something new.”
Lacy Simmons, club marketing coordinator, said it is pretty much about getting people moving and learning stuff about their body. They will offer circuit training and other fun activities such as dancing with instructors on site. A schedule will be available for those interested in the different classes, which will also include a type of hardcore zumba class.
“We are in the process of getting the funds for the necessary tools, so you can measure your blood pressure, heart rate and all that,” Autumn Pittman, club president, said.
After each class, students will be given a health assessment card so that they can keep track of their progress to help better achieve their fitness goals.
The club is also involved with Active Minds, which focus on issues related to mental health with the goal of increasing awareness. Active Minds meet on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. in building 14, room 1462. Mental health and physical health go hand in hand, and the collaboration can be beneficial.
The Fitt and Well Club also participates in two or three community services a semester. The club just completed a 2-mile walk on Pensacola Beach for suicide prevention, and a breast cancer walk is in the works.
The Fitt and Well Club meets every Tuesday at 2 p.m. in building 5 (the PSC Student Center) in the main area by the stage. Bring a friend.
