VERONICA DAVIS – The Corsair

Keeping their undefeated title alive, The Pensacola State College Lady Pirates added another win to the books against College Of Central Florida. What started off as a seesaw first half later became a 96-71 win over Central Florida. The teams were tied six times in the first half but the Lady Pirates kept playing hard and later gained a lead that Central Florida couldn’t beat.

One of the star players, #11 Jessica Merritt, who led in scoring with 18 points, took a hard fall 3 minutes into the second half. With Jessica being hurt in the previous game as well, the Lady Pirates didn’t let that discourage them too much. #10 Meghan Perkins stepped up and played an awesome game. She also led in scoring with 18 points, along with #3 Brandy Broome who had 15 points.

“We didn’t start out very strong, which reminded us of the last game,” said Chanda Rigby, Pensacola State College Lady Pirates Head Coach.  “But we moved Meghan Perkins to point guard which we hadn’t done all year and was done by accident. She took the game over for a while, became a little more aggressive with the ball and it opened up everything for everybody else.”

Although Merritt ‘s injury seemed critical, Coach Rigby explained that they will treat it around the clock and she will play next game.

Other players who had double digit scores were #40 Karneshia Garrett and #33 Darnisha Hamilton; they moved the ball around very well up and down the court. Anxious about tomorrow’s game and in preparation, the Lady Pirates will review the plays from today’s game, continue to encourage each other and hope to make history tomorrow night.
