The PJC Lady Pirates went 2-2 at the Gulf Coast Community College Volleyball tournament held September 23-24.

Before the tournament, Coach Pete Pena said there was some work the girls needed to do to prepare for this tournament and it definitely paid off in the long run.  There were many challenging teams, and although PJC lost to Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Gadsden State, the team had a victory against two of the best schools in the tournament: Sheraton College and St. Johns College of Jacksonville.

“I was overall very pleased with the girls’ performance.  It was some of the best volleyball I’ve seen them play all year.  It takes all six players on the court to do their job in order for us to be successful and everyone played great all weekend,” Pena said.
A special congratulations goes to Margo Yates and Alysia Girod, who were named to the All-tournament Team after this tournament; this is not Girod’s first time making an all-tournament team.

This week, the Lady Pirates focus on beating conference rival Gulf Coast Community College.  In order to be conference champs and proceed to the state level, the girls have to win their next match against Gulf Coast, making it their third win.

“We’ve beat Gulf Coast twice already, but 2-0 can become 2-2 very quickly.  The team hasn’t done anything until we win the third game, become conference champs, and go to state,” Pena said.

Hard work and intense practices are still ahead for the team as they continue in their season.  Pena said one of the things that they need to continue working on is their concentration level.

The Lady Pirates’ next home game is Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
