The Lady Pirates, now 7-2, were on the road over the Thanksgiving Holidays, participating in the Okaloosa-Walton Thanksgiving Classic. On Nov. 25, they played Central Florida Community College in Niceville where they had a close win of 73-70. Women’s Head Coach Chanda Rigby said they were down by 1 point at halftime and then came back in the last half with an 11-point lead with only three minutes to go. However, Rigby continued, Central Florida got hot from the three-point line and trailed by only three points at the end of the game.
“This was a big win for us,” Rigby said. “They ranked 14th in the nation last year.”
Five players had double-double figures in this game. Dana Parker led the scorers with 21 points, followed by Shontel Johnson with 14 points, Kristen London with 12, Ida Edwards with 11, and Ronke Allen with 10 points. Parker is commended by Rigby for making 5 three-pointers. The Lady Pirates also had a 50 percent shooting percentage on their free throws.
The game Nov. 26 didn’t go as well for the Lady Pirates. They took a 59-78 beating against Hillsborough Community College.
“We just couldn’t get in sync with this game,” Rigby said. “We missed a lot of easy shots and with that our defense and rebounding suffered. Our opponents were hot on their shooting and we weren’t. But our goal as always is to learn from this and just try to keep playing better.”
Shontel Johnson was high scorer with 11 points.
