The PJC volleyball invitational conducted on Sept 9 – 10 went, “all and all very well for the Pirates, and was a good weekend for them,” Coach Pete Pena said.
The Pirates opened the tournament with wins against North West Shoals (30-23, 30-27), followed by Lawson State (30-24, 30-16), then a loss to Wallace State (33-31, 36-34), and finished up besting Jefferson Davis (30-14, 30-11).
Both games between PJC and Wallace State went into overtime, Pena said, and were said to be the best games in the tournament.
Two Lady Pirates were named to the all-tournament team – Alysia Girod, who dished out 26 kills and Jodi Carter who salvaged 24 digs.
Pena said two other players deserved notice. Margo Yates had 22 kills, and Allison Revell had 54 assists.
The team will work on building concentration, Pena said, leading up to the second match up with conference opponents Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City. The Pirates won the previous match with GCCC, and need two more wins to qualify for semi-finals in state playoffs. Their next five conference games will be away from PJC country.
