The PJC women’s basketball team racked up another win Dec. 9, but the effort fell short of their usual intensity. The nationally ranked team won 57-38 against L.B. Wallace Community College.
“I am excited about the win,” said Coach Chanda Rigby. “They played hard and it’s always a challenge, but I expected better.”
The Lady Pirates, now 12-1 and ranked No. 7 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll, ran sprints after the game, penance for the lackluster performance.
“Running in practice does not have the same effect as after a game,” Rigby said. “We only have five games until the Panhandle Conference and we need to be ready for the competition.”
L.B. Wallace scored first, but it didn’t take but a few seconds for PJC to attack the court with intensity. Sierra Highgate made an impressive shot after stealing the ball from L.B. Wallace with 7:47 on the clock. PJC ran up a 23-5 lead and held the Lady Saints scoreless for five minutes. By halftime, L.B. Wallace had posted only 11 points on the score board.
PJC entered the second half with a 29-11 lead. Right away the Lady Saints gained some momentum and scored 7 points. The Lady Pirates did not have as much power or concentration in the last 20 minutes of the game. By the end of the game, PJC made a notable 30 steals, but was out-rebounded.
