On the date I am writing this, June 19th, a Union general in Galveston, Texas made a declaration that all slaves in Texas were emancipated, or set free. Today, many African-Americans celebrate this incident as “Juneteenth”; Juneteenth is a portmanteau of the words June and nineteenth and is observed in 40 states of the United States and the District of Columbia.
Last week, I attended a Juneteenth festival downtown where the people sold African clothing, statues, ceramics, etc. and performed all types of black music onstage, including African drumming and dance. The leader of the local West African dance troupe encouraged the patrons to dance along to the drum playing because in Africa, everyone gets involved in some way with the music, instead of sitting down, watching and listening.
I stayed downtown to take in a Blue Wahoos game. The Wahoos played the Mobile BayBears and prevailed in the match, 6-0. Daniel Corcino and Wilkin De La Rosa pitched no-hitters to give the franchise its first victory with a pitcher pitching a no-hitter. That’s how I enjoyed my mid-June, how did you enjoy your mid-June?
