A new chapter began this week for the Pensacola State College Women’s basketball team when athletic director, Bill Hamilton, hired Clenita “Penny” Jones as the new head coach, taking former coach, Leah Drury’s position after two years of dedication.

Jones attended Washington high school and played under one of the most well-known and respected coaches around, Ronnie Bond. She had a phenomenal senior year where she ran with a 31-0 record and took her team on to win the 4A state championship.

She was later recruited to play at the University of West Florida where she played as a starter all four years, was named team defensive player of the year for three years, was once the team MVP and she is still ranked as one of the highest UWF players in history with assists and is eighth in steals.

Jones is currently the assistant coach at Weber state University in Utah, but began her coaching career as the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of South Alabama. She coached for three seasons, shaping four All-Americans, seven All-Region and eight All-Conference players.

According to Hamilton, she is “ready for the challenge, welcomes the pressure in being local and will enjoy the support of our community college.”

PSC will hold a press conference in April to welcome coach Jones and announce her commitment to the athletic department.
