The Academy Awards are the highest honor bestowed upon filmmakers in the United States, and Movies 4 Cinema in Gulf Breeze has a treat not often seen—The Academy Award Nominated Short Films, both live action and animated.

“There are five films in each category ranging from whimsical family films to serious foreign dramas,” said Dylan Carroll, the manager and projectionist at the theatre.

The animated short films are currently showing as separate presentations at 7 p.m. everyday. The films will be showing alongside other Oscar Nominees: American Hustle, Frozen, The Book Thief, August: Osage County and the kid’s movie Nut Job.

The nominated short films are not often seen theatrically, locally or nationally.

“We are the only [theatre] locally showing these films and this is a prime opportunity to see what kind of films we show,” Carroll said.

The theatre has long been trying to convert to the new normal, which is Digital Projection, over the quickly becoming obsolete film projected movies. This, of course, costs money; digital projectors carry a price tag of about $40,000 or more.

“We will continue to show art house films, but to thrive we need to convert,” Carroll said.

Movies 4 Gulf Breeze is located in Gulf Breeze Proper at 1175 Gulf Breeze Pkwy and open seven days a week. All of the films they show are $5 everyday at one, four and 7 p.m. There is also a 10 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. show Friday-Saturday.
