Peep Show

Peep Show

Travis DeSimone.

Corsair.

Over my winter break I found myself with a lot of spare time on my hands and with classes out I was feeling a bit purposeless. This on top of being so far from my family and friends had driven me to a bit of a low point. So I decided to stop indulging my gloominess and crack into some comedy. laughter is kind of the best thing in the world. Even if you are depressed all the time, a laugh is like involuntary happiness that punctuates the rest of your miserable life.

Cue Mitchell and Webb. These men are responsible for a variety of sketch comedy shows: Bruiser, That Mitchell and Webb Look, and The Mitchell and Webb Situation. The show of theirs that really caught my attention was Peep Show. It follows the exploits of two flatmates. Mark, who is a loan manager is anal retentive, sexually repressed, and socially awkward. Jeremy is a free spirited slacker and “musician” who is vain, selfish, manipulative, and a hedonist.

What makes the show so genius is the way the characters interact. First person shots accompanied with internal monologue take you through the dark, embarrassing,  and sometimes despicable thoughts of Mark and Jeremy. The best part is that no matter how terrible these characters act, it is totally relatable. I have been in situations like these guys have, only when it happened to me I wasn’t laughing.

I would recommend Peep Show to anyone who likes British comedy. It has been running on BBC 4 since 2003 and is returning for it’s 8th season this year. If you have Netflix, queue up and travel with Mark and Jeremy to those places you never wanted to go to in the first place.
