Have you ever asked yourself, “Why is there something rather than nothing?” or, “How do we know anything?”
These are the kind of questions the Pensacola State College Philosophy Club talks about.
The club meets every Monday at 2p.m. in Room 1444 in building 14. John Holder is the Assistant Professor of Philosophy and the co-adviser of the philosophy club at PSC.
“The philosophy club has been around for several years, but I have been advising it for 4 years now,” Holder said.
During meetings, they take care of a little bit of business first and then they sit and talk about important questions such as, “Why are we here?”
According to Holder, the philosophy club tries to get involved with the Florida Philosophical Association and attend a meeting at least once a year.
Matt Stanfill, a PSC philosophy instructor, is the co-adviser of the club and has been active at the college for almost a year.
According to Stanfill and Holder, the club is active in the community and one of the things they do is participate in the United Way Day Of Caring.
In the UWDOC, Holy Cross Episcopal Church and the philosophy club get together and give back to the community by completing assigned projects. For example, the projects usually involve assisting the elderly with home projects like yard work.
“Just going out and giving to the community makes us feel connected to the community,” Stanfill said.
As for the future of the club, both Holder and Stanfill see it growing.
According to them, at PSC, it seems like many students are becoming more interested to learn how school can help them in their lives out in the community and in the classroom.
