Melissa McShan is the Pirates’ new physical trainer. She got her Bachelors in Kinesiology at University of Northern Texas and her Masters Degree of Science in Sports Management from Southern Mississippi. She did internships and worked at Clemson, Jacksonville State University, and Alabama.
“I got to work with the WNBA Detroit Shock team for a few weeks,” McShan said.
Before coming to Pensacola State College, her recent job was in Hattiesburg, Miss. working at a couple of local high schools. She’s been at PSC for a month now. Before her job at PSC, she took her CSCS (Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification) exam.
“Now I have a National Certification which is the ATC behind my last name,” McShan said.
McShan’s credentials that got her to PSC are: Licensed in the state of Florida, National Certification, CSCS, her Bachelors in Kinesiology, her Masters in Sports Management, and all of her hard work and dedication.
“I wear multiple hats and I really like that,” McShan said. “I like a variety.”
McShan specifically works with the volleyball team, the men’s basketball team, and the softball team. She just started working with the dance team and cheer team .
“I’m also here for all of the athletes,” McShan said.
In January 2012, she will be teaching the PET 2622 (Care and Preventions of Athletics Injuries) class.
“Right now, I’m just trying to get my feet wet and understand the basics of the job,” McShan said. “I hope to expand it and offer more services not just to the athletes, but to the community and everyone on campus.”
