The PJC Softball team lost its first game of the FCCAA State Softball Tournament in Kissimmee on Friday to St. Petersburg by the score of 2-1.
The Lady Pirates struggled offensively throughout the first game, getting only 2 hits off of St. Petersburg pitcher Andrea Fugate. PJC’s best chance came in the bottom of the 6th inning. With the Lady Pirates down 2-0, Holley Joyner struck-out with runners on the corners after an astounding 13 pitch at-bat. Following the Joyner strike-out, a wild pitch brought Angie Coteat home to make the score 2-1.
Judith Husband was the losing pitcher in the effort, allowing nine hits over seven innings.
Tallahassee, who were swept by the Lady Pirates in regular season play, jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game. PJC fought back to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th, only to have the Eagles retake the lead in the top of the 7th. The Lady Eagles committed only one error in the game.
“We just couldn’t get any hits in either game, and that’s what killed us,” Assistant Coach Pete Pena said.
The Lady Pirates finish the season with a 36-13 record.
