Tim Ajmani – The Corsair

George Washington despised the idea of political parties. He warned Americans that they could become dangerous and cunning, and harmful to the government and general public. Who would’ve thought that two centuries later that he knew exactly what he was talking about. Whenever we turn on CNN or FOX News, we almost always see a debate of some sort between Republicans and Democrats, with the 3rd party hardly mentioned.

Today’s America is divided into civil war, but not in a literal sense. Acquiring positions in the government is more like a popularity bash. What happened to doing what is best for the country?

Republicans and Democrats have gotten so caught up in getting mad over which party has the majority of the positions held in the Senate and House, that they have lost sight over what government is really about: solving the problems of the American people. Republicans are concerned with appeasing Republicans; likewise, Democrats are concerned with appeasing Democrats.

What about appeasing the American people? Why not come up with compromises and solutions with propositions that suit both parties, and more importantly, our nation? I bet Republicans and Democrats are more worried about retaining their jobs than doing the right thing and working together.

Just days ago, George W. Bush’s daughter, Barbara Bush was all over the news for supporting marriage equality with her video that splashed across the internet. I’m sure Democrats will somehow use this fact, along with the information that her father strongly opposed marriage equality, to discredit a potential Republican candidate for a future presidency, or any government position for that matter, to try to get votes, which is simply ridiculous.

Who cares that the daughter of a former American President has different views than her father? Good for her for supporting what she strongly believes in. Many people think that she has embarrassed her father because of this act. Why? Isn’t Bush embarrassed enough for what people think of his presidential run (sarcasm intended)? Honestly, Republicans and Democrats should be more concerned about problems that all Americans will have to face sooner or later, like the national debt, for example.

Republicans or Democrats will not solve problems like the national debt. Americans will have to. Key word, Americans. What is going to happen if both political parties collapse? It will be travesty! Americans will have to work with Americans, what a shame.

If George Washington, looked down on us today, and saw that we have such a rift between our political parties, I wonder what he would say. I don’t imagine he would be too pleased.
