PJC’s Student Govern-ment Association will play host to Rock for Relief, a benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims, from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Oct. 14, in the student center on Pensacola campus.

The show is for all ages and free to the public. A Red Cross table will be set up at the door, accepting donations to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina and to give speed to recovery efforts in the near-by areas of the Gulf Coast.

Currently, nine musical acts are scheduled to appear including Obsession Makes Perfect, Red Letter Lipstick, and Yearbook to Magazines.

The event is scheduled to have caricature and henna-tattoo artists, raffles, and food and drinks all on hand.

“We wanted to try and do some sort of benefit,” said Pensacola campus SGA secretary Steven Anderson. “A lot of other people have been trying to throw benefits, like there was one at the Daily Grind recently.”

With some pretty famous local talent on board, it looks like the SGA might have a successful event on its hands.

The band “Red Letter Lipstick,” has earned rave reviews from local venues, and has even played at Warped Tour while “Obsession Makes Perfect,” has a very strong following itself.

All of the nine scheduled local bands are playing the benefit for free, organizers said.

In another effort to aid Katrina victims, SGA will be raffling off a bed, a guitar, and assorted gift certificates.

“We’re hoping to raise as much money as possible to donate to the Red Cross,” Anderson said. “If we raise $100 then that’s $100 we can send to the Red Cross. If we can raise more than that, all the better.”

SGA President Veronica Walker agrees.

“A lot of people don’t have time to give aid and this would be a great time to come out, have fun, and give back to the community.”
