For those of us who watch American Idol with envy at the fame, the glory, the snide remarks by Simon Cowell in the tight T-shirts, but know we don’t have a chance because our singing skills are nonexistent – here’s our chance.

A new device called the Singing Coach is described as “combining cutting edge technology with the expertise of a vocal coach- and it allows anyone to become a better singer using their personal computer.”

“It’s everyone’s home version of Simon Cowell,” PJC student Eli Dunn said.

The Singing Coach connects to any personal computer, and uses a ‘patent-pending vocal range analyzer’ to give feedback on the singer’s performance.  Supposedly this lets him or her see exactly where their pitch, rhythm, and tempo need to be adjusted.

To use the singing coach, users load the program onto their computer, follow the step-by-step instructions, and utilize their Britney Spears-like headphones with a built in microphone for the twenty-minute lesson.

At the end of the lesson, Singing Coach provides the user with a score from 1 to 100, but unfortunately it will not provide a sarcastic comment on how the user is the worst singer in the tri-state area.

Once a certain skill is mastered, they move on to the next level.  With the ‘Unlimited’ Singing Coach, singers can access more than 10,000 songs, compose their own songs, and compete with their friends for the highest score.

So would campus students use the Singing Coach?

“No, because I don’t sing,” Jason Hual said.  “If I did sing, I still wouldn’t use it because it would tell me that I sing bad.”

The Singing Coach- $50.

Unlimited Singing Coach- $100.

Belting out “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” in your pajamas and an actual microphone:

Priceless.
