Monday, 12 November America and PJC will honor our veterans.  The college, like many establishments will be closed.  For what it’s worth here is my Veterans Day wish.

My wish is this nation will not absorb this day as just another holiday or day off.  My prayer is that we each pause and savor the meaning and the magnitude of this observance.

The phrase “our national treasure” is often used in discussing the war in which America is currently engaged.  Usually people and money comprise “national treasure.”  I usually think of Pirates and buried loot when I hear the word treasure.

What is America’s “national treasure”? You are.  America’s treasure is its people.  And with all treasures there are some items more highly valued than others.  I believe veterans and those currently serving are among the most highly prized gems in America’s treasure chest.

The American Warrior is distinct in their disdain of war.  However, when they do find themselves at war, he and she exhibit seemingly mutually exclusive passions; ferocity and compassion.  The ferocity helps to end the conflict as soon as possible, an early “knock out” rather than going for endless rounds.  Compassion is necessary that our victories are not due solely from military might.  It is important that our humanity is both preserved for our benefit and that it might be passed on to those over whom we are victorious.

As we pause to honor and celebrate those who have served America, let’s also remember those on active duty.  The link below gives some snapshots of our brothers and sisters serving today.

At PJC we like to say that “Every day is Veterans Day”
