Ebonwood Community Center hosted a health fair on Oct. 18 for the nearby community and PJC students from the Warrington campus.
Students from the dental assisting, licensed practical nursing (LPN) and registered nursing (RN) programs participated in educating citizens on the importance of blood pressure, diabetes awareness and dental hygiene. Other booths for hearing, chiropractics, sickle cell and breast cancer awareness were also displayed at the health fair.
PJC students feel that health fairs are beneficial to the community, “because a lot of people may have health problems they may not realize they have,” said Larry Bonner, a PJC RN student.
Free tests, such as checks for blood sugar levels and hearing tests, are offered at the health fair. “There are a lot of things they can get checked out in one place,” said Monica Hicks, a PJC RN student.
However, not many people attended the health fair, because the community center is a small area for hosting.
One student, Debra Smith, said, “I don’t think (the health fair is) advertised enough. If it had more publicity there’d be more community participation.”
Shontal Taite, LPN student, said the health fair was “great.”
